In the previous article, we discussed the considerations related to getting a CT scan, and this article will continue to discuss other issues related to getting a CT scan to help you get the most comprehensive information.
When will we know the results of the CT scan?
It usually takes about 24 to 48 hours to get the results of a CT scan. A radiologist (a doctor who specializes in reading and interpreting CT scans and other radiological tests) will review your scan and prepare a report explaining the findings. In emergency situations such as hospitals or emergency rooms, healthcare providers typically receive results within an hour.
Once the radiologist and the patient’s health care provider have reviewed the results, the patient will make another appointment or receive a phone call. The patient’s health care provider will discuss the results.
Are CT scans safe?
Health care providers believe that CT scans are generally safe. CT scans for children are also safe. For children, your provider will adjust to a lower dose to reduce their radiation exposure.
Like X-rays, CT scans use a small amount of ionizing radiation to capture images. Possible radiation risks include:
Cancer risk: In theory, the use of radiation imaging (such as X-rays and CT scans) may lead to a slightly increased risk of developing cancer. The difference is too small to measure effectively.
Allergic reactions: Sometimes, people have an allergic reaction to contrast media. This can be a mild or severe reaction.
If a patient is concerned about the health risks of a CT scan, they can consult their healthcare provider. They will help make informed decisions about scanning.
Can pregnant patients get a CT scan?
If the patient may be pregnant, the provider should be told. CT scans of the pelvis and abdomen may expose the developing fetus to radiation, but this is not enough to cause harm. CT scans of other parts of the body do not put the fetus at any risk.
In a word
If your provider recommends a CT (computed tomography) scan, it’s normal to have questions or feel a little concerned. But CT scans themselves are painless, carry minimal risks, and can help providers detect a variety of health conditions. Getting an accurate diagnosis can also help your healthcare provider determine the best treatment for your condition. Discuss any concerns you have with them, including other testing options.
