At the Australian Society for Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy (ASMIRT) conference in Darwin this week, Women’s Diagnostic Imaging (difw) and Volpara Health have jointly announced significant progress in the application of artificial intelligence to mammography quality assurance. Over the course of 12 months, the application of Volpara Analytics™ AI software has significantly improved the diagnostic accuracy and operational efficiency of DIFW, Brisbane’s premier tertiary imaging centre for women.
The study highlights Volpara Analytics™ ‘s ability to automatically and objectively evaluate the positioning and compression of each mammogram, a key element of high-quality imaging. Traditionally, quality control has involved managers using already stretched resources to visually assess image quality and perform labor-intensive reviews of mammograms. However, Volpara’s AI technology introduces a systematic, unbiased approach that dramatically reduces the time required for these assessments from hours to minutes and aligns practices with global benchmarks.
Sarah Duffy, Chief Mammographer at difw, presented impactful results: “Volpara has revolutionized our quality assurance procedures, lifting our image quality from the global median to the top 10%. It also aligns with rigorous national and international standards by ensuring optimal compression, improving patient comfort while maintaining image quality.”
